Introduction

Join us as we visit the old Swindon Swimming Baths.

The building has three floors and a cellar. The main areas are the large pool, sauna area, small dis-used pool and the mall. There’s rooms up on other floors you can also investigate.

History

A magnify Victorian Grade 2 listed structure built of a restrained Queen Ann style. Although fairly modernised inside, many original features are still in place.

First erected in 1891 for the Great Western Railway as the GWR medical fund dispensary and swimming baths, providing those suffering with illness or injury with the best possible care.

The building would also have been used as a hospital for returning soldiers in World War One. It was an overflow for the main hospital in the central community centre, and sadly a final resting place for those that didn’t make it. Soldiers would have been offloaded from the nearby station and brought to the building via networks of tunnels underneath the road. The morgue is thought to have been situated where the Turkish bath resting suite and changing room is!

Activity

Staff have seen shadows and witnessed things being moved around
There’s a room where theres a man who doesn’t like women
There’s a man in the cellar
Children have also been seen and heard here
It’s been said that at least ten spirits haunt this location

In addition to the above, lights have been turned on and off, various odours, disembodied voices and who knows what else we will find here!

Event Plan

The evening will begin with an introductory talk and refreshments. We will then hold demonstrations and teach you how to use our equipment, which will be yours to use throughout the evening. (No one will be expected to use equipment against their will, we respect the wishes of others).

We will then proceed with a lit walk around Fort Widley.

After demonstrating our large range of equipment, we will investigate for any ghostly activity. Trigger objects and paranormal experiments will be set up in various areas. We can divide into groups for night vigils, and the very brave are welcome to explore on their own!!

Regular comfort breaks will be taken which will give the groups an opportunity to discuss any paranormal activity found.
